Streets provide a routable network of federal, state, county and municipal and private roads. All public roads should be represented in the database as well as many of the private roads that are open to the general public. A private section of pavement that serves less than three households is generally considered a private drive and is not included in this set.
The features are intended to represent the driving surfaces of the roads, and are often near the center of the road pavement, however, this varies by feature. Where the pavement is divided by a median or raised divider of more than 50', a separate feature represents the pavement in each direction (a dual carriageway representation).
The center of physical roadway pavement may or may not represent the center of the road right of way. Road right of ways may taper or change width. There has been no attempt to alter the road centerline to conform to right of way that is not parallel or alters in width.
The Streets data represents all public roads in Ramsey County and many private roads open to public access. Road centerlines help support map general production, thematic mapping, land surveying and engineering projects. It provides a routable street network of federal, state, county and municipal roads with address attribution appropriate for geocoding. Many of the current attributes were added to support the Ramsey County Computer Aided Dispatch system.

Attributes held within the GIS graphical data base are entered by GIS personnel utilizing manual or semi-automated methods.

Entire Ramsey County coverage
Digitized information is generally +/- 7 feet; some areas have been found to be +/- 30 feet. COGO (coordinate geometry) accuracy generally is +/- 1.0 foot.
In 1986, the road centerlines were digitized from hand drawn 1:2400 half and 1:1200 quarter section maps. In 1995, the centerline data was converted to an ArcINFO format and held in an ArcStorm database. Centerlines were converted in 2005 to an ESRI ArcGIS GeoDatabase.
The original vector data was created utilizing positions calculated from plats using coordinate geometry programs. In 2013, the purpose of this data changed from showing survey centerline to representing the approximate center of the driving surface. This change was necessary to move to a multifunction data source for emergency services, increased accuracy in geocoding, and routing.
This file has been further modified using several sources including Ramsey County Public Work's survey centerlines and digitizing off aerial photos. Attributes have been included to allow geocoding and the support of Ramsey County Computer Aided Dispatch.
